Birnie Coalition celebrates founding
The James and Charlotte Birnie Leadership Coalition invites the community of Wahkiakum to its founding celebration to be held in Skamokawa at the fair on August 22 from 1-4 p.m.
The Steering Committee of Horizons announces the end of its mission in Wahkiakum and formation of an ongoing community leadership and mentoring group which is to be known as the James and Charlotte Birnie Leadership Coalition.
The celebration of the Birnie Coalition will be held at the Wahkiakum WSU Extension booth located on the main thoroughfare of the fair grounds. WSU Cougar Gold along with local foods and harvest will be served.

Board of Equalization to begin appeal hearings
Wahkiakum Board of Equalization will be starting their appeal hearings in September.
The days scheduled per date are September 6, 13, and 27 and October 4. Hearings will be held in the Third Floor Meeting Room of the Wahkiakum County Courthouse in Cathlamet.
Appellants should be receiving letters informing them of their hearing date and time in the next couple of weeks.

Hunter's Education course makes registration changes
Those wishing to take the Hunter Education course should register and pick up course materials on August 30 between 8-10 a.m. at the Fire Hall Meeting Room in Cathlamet.
The actual Hunter's Education course and test will take place on September 20 beginning at 8 a.m..
The course is required for all first time hunters born after January 1, 1972, and for those wishing to join the Trap Shooting club through FFA or to buy a hunting license. There is no age limit.

Red Cross blood drawing set
Southwest Washington Red Cross will hold a blood drive August 25, 2-7 p.m., at Wendt Elementary School in Cathlamet.
Donors are urged to call Diane Tischer, 849-4257, to set up an appointment.

Warrior volleyball starts August 25
Thomas Middle School Volleyball will start August 25 at 3 p.m. in the JCT Middle School Gym, Coach Shelley Olsen announced this week.
All athletes entering the seventh and eighth grade must have a physical on file and proof of insurance before they are able to practice. If they have any questions please call Olsen at 795-3261 or 795-3321.

Chili cook off fires up

The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce is preparing for the 5th Annual Labor Day “Buzzards Breath” Chili Cook-off to be held on August 30.
Chili cooks are invited to make their special recipes at the Elochoman Slough Marina in Cathlamet from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a "unique" trophy for the team with the best chili. Public tasting begins at 1 p.m.
There will also be a Tortilla Throwing Contest with prizes, live music by the Naselle Marimba Band, a Cow Plop Raffle and a beer garden.

All-church picnic August 17

The annual Ecumenical Picnic is scheduled for August 17 this year at Erickson Park in Cathlamet.
The picnic, hosted by Wahkiakum Interfaith Network is open to everyone and although there will be no performers this year, the Vacation Bible School students will participate in the 11 a.m. service.
The festivities will then begin at 11:45 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring their own picnic lunch.


Gleaning project looking for produce
Phyllis Likness, coordinator of the FFA/Woman's Club Gleaning Project is looking for produce to pick.
Students of Mr. Hurley will pick the produce with a third going to the owner, a third to the food bank and a third to the FFA.
Call Likness at 795-8801 to organize a collection.

Youth football season coming
Wahkiakum Youth Football's season is approaching and any interested 4th, 5th and 6th graders need to sign up to play.
Participants will need a registration form and a physical before they can play.

Redmen Hall closes one exhibit, opens another
August 9 will be the last day of the Fiber Arts Exhibit at Redmen Hall.
There will be demonstrations of several types of weaving and spinning by the Clatsop Weavers and Spinners artists from 1-4 p.m.
On August 16, the hall will be host to the first major exhibit by the Johnson Park Artists.
"Valley Views" will represent the artistic talents of around a dozen Wahkiakum area artists. The exhibit had previews at Bald Eagle Day and the Covered Bridge Festival and will run until September 28.
