Think about shopping local this Christmas

LAKES AGAIN--Well, over the weekend we certainly had a lot of rain coming down and it was soon apparent that the only ones real happy about that were the ducks and the geese, as fields turned into lakes once again. We were even hearing “Wahkiakum” spoken several times (incorrectly, but close) on the television as the Grays River was in danger of flooding they said--let’s hope that stays untrue! But as winter is creeping upon us, let’s hope we are all prepared for these kinds of weather related happenings, from power outages to high water; it’s time to get prepared for living in the country when the weather gets nasty!

SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from November 13-19 are Ashley Helms, Deloris Lyon, Hap Anderson, Pat Ohrberg, Rory Heywood, Samantha Havens, Brian Havens, Tanner Collupy, Barry Brown, Zachary Stewart, Roberta Trotter, Katie Watson, LuAnn Davison, Glen Davison, Erik Pedersen and Kylian Cochran. Happy Anniversary wishes go out to Charlie and Kay Buennagel and Roy and Cathy LaBerge. I hope you all have wonderful celebrations this week!

REMINDER--It’s almost time for folks to be mailing out a lot of holiday cards and it is really imperative that you try to make sure that you have the correct addresses and a return address on them. In case the letter is undeliverable, at least it can come back to you, as if not, it will go into a “dead letter box” and your well wishes, gift cards or money and all, will be lost and you’ll never know what happened to them. Please don’t let that happen, always, always have a return address on your mail.

EARLY RELEASES--School conferences mean there will be early releases for grades K-8 today and tomorrow (November 13, 14) beginning at 11:30 a.m. This means there will be no lunch served and it also means the sidewalks and roadways will be having more children on them, so drivers need to be extra cautious.
Also during the conference time, there will be tables full of unclaimed clothing, so if your child has come home without his coat, jacket, or whatever, you’d best be claiming it now or all of these items will be headed to the clothing bank.

WELL WISHES--I got a surprise call from Yvonne Webb on Sunday night. It’s not that hearing from her is really such a surprise, as she often calls me with tidbits of information but the fact that she was calling me from the confines of OHSU, certainly was! It seems Yvonne has had several health issues and was in ICU for awhile, but is now up on the cardiac floor and has a room that looks over the new tram that goes up there. From her birds-eye view, she is marveling at the amount of traffic that surrounds the area. She is also hoping she gets to come home soon, and we hope that maybe by the time this goes to print, she will be here to read it. Take care Yvonne!

STILL “BUGGIE”--I have had the clogged head, feel rotten deal for the past week, so I have not been out and about much at all. It seems I am not alone, as I hear many people complaining, via the telephone, of the same thing. My well wishes go out to one and all who are dealing with this bug which really hits your sinuses and drains your energy. Let’s hope we all get healthy by holiday time, which is approaching very fast!

THIS SATURDAY--If you’re looking for a little getaway from it all, why not head to the Wine Shop in Cathlamet this Saturday evening from 5-8 p.m. and enjoy their wine tasting event. It will feature wines from Italy and will cost $7. There will be wine tasting events twice a month and Maria Joell would like to invite all of you to come and check out her array of wines and also all her new goodies that will make your gift basket complete. After Thanksgiving, her daughter Lea will be there to make these custom baskets for you, so why not shop local and give a special gift that you have chosen, to that special someone?

MORE GIFTS--Sometimes we find ourselves in a quandary as to what kind of gifts to give our friends or loved ones. Some of them say they don’t want anything, which really doesn’t mean they don’t want “anything”, just not more stuff to dust or tend to, so why not give them a gift that doesn’t require a lot of care or doesn’t clutter: like gift certificates for meals at our local Duck Inn or how about a kayak tour? Maybe they’d like a weekend getaway at the Skamokawa Center, where there are small rooms to large suites. How about a gift certificate for beer and pizza at the Oasis or a ‘plant it outside’ item from Silvermans’ Nursery, that is almost carefree? Then of course, there are those who like to have things donated in their name, like money on their PUD bill or food donated in their name. There are just a wide variety of things that can be done for those who are wanting nothing but who would truly appreciate a thoughtful gift like that. So, whether you have someone who likes things that you can purchase from our local glassblowers or books by local authors, just try to think local and that will help everybody right now!

WRONG MCCLAIN--My apologies to Miss Anna Kuhn who I had incorrectly hooked her up as Brian McClain's daughter, when in fact she is the daughter of Randy and Susan McClain Kuhn….oops! Anna was the winner of the $25 first prize offered by the Skamokawa Grangers at their costume dance on November 1. Sorry about that!

TRAVELERS--The Hotel Cathlamet Assisted Living residents got to travel to Grays River last month and they all enjoyed dinner down at the Grays River Café. Operators Bob and Bev Paul were great hosts and provided a wonderful dinner for the group, which they all enjoyed and it was a great outing for the residents.

IN OUR THOUGHTS--Maurice Mooers is going in for some surgery this week and we want him to know that we are keeping him in our thoughts and prayers at this time. Also Minnie Carroll, who has been battling some serious health issues, was taken to the hospital also, and we are keeping her and her family in our prayers as well as they deal with this tragic situation. Our heartfelt thoughts are with the family of John Luthi as well, as he is fighting his own health issues. We’ll be thinking only positive thoughts for Connie Shrum who goes to OHSU this week for some tests and we hope that she finds out some good news amongst all the other news she’s received lately. Also, Beth Sheresh took a fall and was sporting a cast after she broke her arm in three places not long ago and we hope that heals up well for her. Then there are a ton of folks who are coughing and hacking with these colds and sinus things we are having trouble getting rid of, so I hope all of you get to feeling better, including me!

ELECTIONS--The Skamokawa Grange #425 met this past week and officers were elected, most of whom kept the exact same posts, so Chuck Parker is still our President and Bill Chamberlain is still our VP. However, Jessica Fletcher stepped down as Program Director, and I was voted in as the new one ( I was home with my cold!) Treasure and Michelle Collupy were sworn in as new grange members and we’re happy to have them join the group! The next grange meeting will be held on November 24, at 7:30 p.m. We hope all grangers will try to make it as we have a busy time ahead of us.

COMING UP--It’s just a month away: the Community Christmas gathering at the Skamokawa Grange Hall on December 13. We do hope you will try to attend, as this joint effort is being put together by your Skamokawa Fire Department volunteers and the Skamokawa Grangers. It will feature a free spaghetti dinner and treats from Santa Claus for the kids. If you’d like your child to have a gift from Santa, please bring one with their name on it and he will pass it out to them; Santa is a bit hard-pressed this year, so he’s asking parents to help him out! While there is no charge for this dinner, we’ll gladly take donations to help both the fire department and the grangers continue to serve this community. If you’d like to help out with this dinner, or make a donation toward it, give me a call at 795-3425.
